Because of the whole Doritos Viralocity contest, it got me thinking – what does it take for a video to go truly viral.   A viral video is a video that becomes popular through the process of internet sharing, typically though internet media sharing websites.  Viral videos often contain humourous content and include televised comedy sketches such as Saturday Night Live’s Dick in a Box; amateur video clips like Star Wars Kid, the Numa Numa videos, The Dancing Cadet, The Evolution of Dance, the “Benny Lava” video, Chocolate Rain on youtube; and web-only productions such as I Got a Crush… on Obama.

HUMOR is sometimes considered to be a vital component and characteristic of a viral video. But humor is not, in fact, the defining characteristic; a viral video is any video that is passed electronically from person to person, regardless of its content.  That is why the entries so far for the Doritos Viralocity contest has been mediocre to say the least.  The highest viewed video for the contest has gotten close to 20,000 Youtube views,. and features a teenager with a camera sneaking up on his room-mate, who has barricaded himself in his room, and is eating dorito chips … where is the creativity in that ?!  There is none, rather this is just a video that has gained views simply through peer-to-peer social networking, and that too for the sake for this contest.  It will never even come close to the 42,000,000 views that real viral videos like Chocolate Rain has amassed on YouTube.

Now I’m not saying mine is the best, but atleast it has got some thinking behind it.  I’m trying to create Zesto into a brand of it’s own.  I’d like to think of him as “Fido Dido WITH BALLS!”.  He is bold (just like the flavor), risk-taking, adventurous, and not afraid to say what’s on his mind.  You may have noticed, that I’ve included the link http://www.zesto.tv in my video.  That’s because when I was making the video, I was thinking of the big picture.  On the website, I’ve created a bunch of follow up videos elaborating on Zesto’s bold, heroic, and bad-ass behavior:

I hope Zesto will gain in popularity.  If not for the Doritos Viralocity contest, at least fro another brand.  Yesterday I got an e-mail from Richardo Fonseca (from Wooshii), and this is what he had to say:

Well folks, it’s that time of year again when the creative big-wigs at BBDO Canada decides it’s time to hold another “submit your 30s video for Doritos, and depending on how many views and votes you get, you might win $250,000″ contest.

Even though I’m not a big fan of crowd-sourcing, I’ve decided to submit to the Dorito Gods, and take my chances.

Here’s my entry:

This year, the winner will be decided by how well they market their content.  So apart from using Twitter and Facebook, they want your video to go truly VIRAL (hence the name “Doritos Viralocity”).  Here you’ll even get points, based on where your YouTube video gets embedded, and they even give 100 points for people who view your video from another continent.  This is where all my family members living abroad will come in handy

Leaving Toronto in October to be with my wife was a wise decision.  Not only did I escape from the harsh Canadian winters, it allowed me to spend some quality time with my wife, as well as reflect on what I do for a living.  Having started my own creative studio in July of 2008, I’ve been extremely fortunate to be able to work from anywhere in the world using my laptop and internet.  For the past three months that I’ve been abroad, I’ve been able to do work with a steady stream of small clients and make enough money to pay my  mortgage and bills on time.  Now that I’m getting ready to return back to Toronto, I’m wondering on how I could take it up a notch.

2010 is gonna be the year of reckoning.  I’m gonna do some good work, and make some good money.  I want to be able to collaborate with other creatives and come up with better ideas. I WANT TO WIN AWARDS! I want to find an Advertising Guru from whom I can learn the tricks of the trade, pick their brain, see how they think and deal with clients (someone like Alex Bogusky, Sally Hogshead, or Zak Mroueh) – so that one day, I too can join that pantheon of creative advertising mavens.

I’ve decided it’s once again time to update my resume and send out my portfolio to Ad agencies, and see if there are any openings for an Art Director.  I’ve already updated my website (http://www.Art-Director.ca), as well as http://www.DennyKurien.com.   In this line of work, you’re always striving to grow and expand your horizon.  I need to re-educate myself on what’s out there, what’s hip, what’s happening, and what’s hot.  Last year I felt I was working in a vacuum and not really learning anything new.  Plus the whole country was knee-deep in recession, no one was hiring, and so the primary goal was just to hang on and survive.  Now clients realize that it’s time to start spending again, and pump money into marketing and advertising.

In general, this is how the process works:

1.) Company has a problem (eg. needs a logo or ad)
2.) Company broadcasts problem online (eg. on crowdspring.com)
3.) Online “crowd” is asked to give solutions
4.) Crowd submits solutions
5.) Crowd vets solutions
6.) Company rewards winning solvers
7.) Company owns winning solutions
8.) Company profits.

The first time I came to know about crowdsourcing, was when Mofilm.com had a call for entry for User Generated Advertising on a list of brands that included Doritos, McDonalds, Best Buy, Visa etc and the winning entry would win them a ticket to the Cannes Lion Festival.  Imagine that – an opportunity for an average Joe to walk away with a Cannes Lion award without even having to work at an Ad Agency.

Crowd-sourcing couldn’t have come at a better time – a time when the world is knee deep in recession, and people are desperate for work. Both the term and its underlying business models have attracted controversy and criticisms, especially among the advertising and design community.  Traditional designers and advertising people feel that they’re losing their stake in the marketplace, as now anyone who owns a version of Photoshop can create logos and be called a designer or an Ad person.

However, there are those who have embraced this new principle, and have even adopted it as their new agency model.  Meet “Victors & Spoils” (http://victorsandspoils.com) – a new ad agency made up of ex-creatives from Crispin Porter + Bogusky.

Their mission is to provide businesses with a better way to solve their marketing, advertising and product-design problems by engaging the world’s most talented creatives.  And just to show that they’re putting their money where their mouth is, they’ve decided to crowd-source their agency’s logo.

Here’s the Creative Brief that Victors & Spoils  submitted to crowdspring.com:

Greetings fine souls. We need a logo. And we have a high bar. This logo will then inform our company’s entire C.I. So it’s shit-hot important for us. Ordinarily we’d have a designer or two whom we know personally take on this task.  But we’re crowdsourcing it instead. Because we have to put our money where our mouth is.

Victors & Spoils™
The world’s first creative (ad) agency based on crowdsourcing principles.

One of our tenets is to crowdsource everything.  So here we go. Let’s crowdsource our logo.

OK. Begin. We told you our name. Victors & Spoils. That part is pretty important. And we told you what we are. We’re an ad agency. Our partners come from arguably the world’s best traditional/digital agency in the world today. Yes, that sounds cocky. No, we’re not dicks. But we do know the goods when we see the goods. So dig deep and bring some styley style. And deliver the goods. {You know you want to.}

Please Notice:

1. The plural on “Victors.” There’s an S there. See it, acknowledge it, live it. Por favor and pretty please. We don’t want to see anything without that S, capiche?

The ampersand. AKA the “&.” Is that a mandatory? No. But we like it. And if we were designing a logo, we’d embrace it – due to the ampersand’s inherent curvy coolness and  opportunity for becoming an anchor or sweet element. But your call.

Thoughts From Us To You – AKA Tonal Brain Dump:

Capture the tone of the name. There are some interesting things going on with our name. Consider conceptual ties potentially. To help explain: We mean a lot when we say “Victors” – Multiple winners in the crowdsource community with each project. The brands/clients win. We win. The industry wins. Etc. We also mean a lot when we say “Spoils.” We plan to offer very high prizes for each project. Very good direction from some of the advertising industry’s best Creative Directors. Multiple prizes for contributors – not winner take all. A ranking system for involvement. A winning submission based on the community’s opinions. And profit sharing. VictorS indeed.

Simplicity. Embrace the simple. Try using typography only. Try black and white only. (Color is OK though if you want to try it.) Then work off that. We like a lot of options as that’s the world from which we come. Options help one discover and explore. And find things. So by “then work off that,” we mean that we would like to encourage you to try other more ornate/complicated things. Perhaps a center illustration. Type going around that in a circular way. Or incorporated in another way. However: Not a mandatory.

**Consider please the idea of a sea or many hands in the air wielding oldschool swords. Like an illustration conveying a crowd of pirates about to charge, but you maybe only see from the elbow or wrist/hand up. Could be cool. Might be a separate element we use. Thank you for tolerating this tangent.**

Tone / Personality. You can think what would be the kind of logo befitting an agency that could very well turn the entire industry on its head. Because that is what we aim to do. There’s a fair amount of disruption in what we’re doing. Rebellion. Flipping things on their ear a bit.

Pirate vibe? Old English vibe? Obviously there’s a bit of that built into the name. Bounty for many winners. So perhaps a bit of the ol’ jolly roger vibe. What would go on the bow of an old pirate ship?
Classic.
Serif typefaces. (Not a mandatory but in our heads.)
Timelessness.
Victorian. (Not a mandatory but in our heads.)
Nothing too slick or polished. Nothing tech-feeling. No shadows or glows or shimmers. The type can and should be clean but if you use other elements we could consider something hand-illustrated or half-tone. The whole thing could feel like it’s been letterpressed or lithiographed. If you are doing dimension, think New York Post. Not funky weird computer/software-generated hackysackness.

Bottom line: We’re talking sweet and classic and timeless here. Something suitable to be painted on the side of a building. Or a military tank that’s bearing down on Madison avenue.

It’s a tall order. But it’s also a great opportunity. And: The talented shall slay.

Well, it turns out that the winning entry came from Andrea Bigiarini (@norbu56 on Twitter).  Andrea – or “B.Ja” as his friends call him.  He’s a graphic designer who lives just outside Florence, Italy, in a town called Impruenta on the Chianti hills with his wife Stefania and daughter Francescaa.   B.Ja is a craftsman whose father is a painter. Andrea has been designing since 1978 and “grew up around canvas, pencils, oil and turpentine.” He is the sort of artist who sketches first, goes to the computer second.

I had a chance to interview Andrea (aka B.Ja), and this is what he had to say:

1.) How did you hear about “Victors & Spoils” ?
I read about it on the web – this new crowdsourcing agency.

2.) What was it about “Victors & Spoils” that attracted you to enter the design competition ?
The 3 points mentioned in the Creative Brief:

A. Simplicity. Embrace the simple.
(My style has always been complicated).

B. Tone / Personality. Serif typefaces. (Not a mandatory but in our heads.)  Timelessness. Victorian. (Not a mandatory but in our heads.)

This line jump out at me like a beacon in the dark. “Victorian? They said Victorian and timeless?!  So I’ve decided to send 2 different logos. One white on black horizontal and one black on white rounded, as a badge or a sheriff star.  This was the other logo that I sent:

3.) What was your inspiration behind the Victors & Spoils logo that you designed ?
In their brief, they said they wanted their logo to be a  “call to arms” to all the creatives. In my logo, I tried to capture that Century Style look & feel,  translate this call to arms with 2 lines of copy “Power to the brand” and “Power to People”.  It had a good semi-heroic feel.

4.) Why did you create it in Black & White, and not include any color ? Any particular reason behind the various graphical elements ?

Graphic Design, back in my days, was made by paper and Indian ink. I love nibs, old drawing instruments and all kinds of papers. Black & White are the opposing forces in the universe for all beings and things. I loved the contrast and the conflict between these two forces.

5.) What did Victors & Spoils pay you for the winning design ?
$1000 along with satisfaction and a cool, good, friendly support from Mr.Evan Fry and his company.
(incidentally, the 2nd prize winner was awarded $500, 3rd place was $400, 4th place was $300, and 5th place winner was awarded $200).

6.) Do you currently have a website showing your latest creative work ?

Last years I worked a lot on Web Entertainment and Video-Games.  One day I decided to start writing and create a book:  “The Xutan Papers”.  It’s part novel, part role-playing game, and part starter-kit to the world that I’ve created.  . I made this book completely by myself, story, logos, page design and printing. 8.) Apart from being a designer, you’re also an author, illustrator, and a musician. Please explain more ?

AUTHOR:
When I was a boy my dream was to be writer. At 51 I’ve decided to follow this dream. I’ve started studying screen-writing and story structure (American style). I’ve written 3 scripts for movies.  After that I decided to study creative writing on books (Gotham Writers Workshop, etc) and took a couple of courses.  What I’m doing now is ending my 1st novel “The Seven Magnificent Dwarfs”.

ILLUSTRATOR:
My father is a painter and I grew up between brushes and colors. I’ve been drawing and painting since I was a boy.  I’ve done a couple of illustration work in the past, but in Italy it’s pretty difficult. So I paint, done some exhibitions but keep the best work for myself. Art is a kind of an obsession where you draw and paint your deepest nightmares or dreams.
I love painting using water-color.  Here’s are a few samples of my work:

9.) Tell us about your family and upbringing in Italy ? Your friends call you “B.Ja” – why ?

FAMILY:
I was born in a fantastic family and this is very important to me. From my parents I have received the gift to be impermeable to the evil even in very dark situations. This helped me a lot to survive in very dangerous situations.  I want to thanks my mother Mara and my father Gino for this big gift.  I’ve lived in Florence since 20 then started to see the world, mostly Caribbean and South America. Milan. I’ve lived for 13  years in Milan. Working with graphics and on the new frontier of the computer. I made 5/6 video games on commodore and other old platforms.
Rome. 17 years there. I love that city!

1995 – I won the Bologna’s Futur-Show (game fair) wirth Techno Maya, an RPG (role Plòaying Game).  Worked as Creative Manager for MGE Communications (17 Interactive CD-ROMS), partner in Micronasa, Webintouch ad other society of the New Economy boom.

Last December 22nd, I fell in love with Stefania and she fell in love with me.  1st of April I got married to her at the Belize Embassy in Rome. A dream!  4 people only and the man who married us is a good friend of mine.
Now I live on the hills around Florence, Impruneta (if you come I’ll open some special Chianti bottles) with my sweet-heart Stefania and my daughter-in-law Francesca of 13. She loves horse-ring.

2- Why my  friends call me B-Ja?
“B-Ja” is short for Bigiarini (for lazy people). They call me “Bigia” since I was a boy because many kids distorted my family’s name. It happens now too. “Hello Mr. Bigiarni”, “… humm Bizzarrini?” and so on.
In Sanskrit (historical Indo-Aryan language, one of the liturgical languages of Hinduism and Buddhism) BJA means “the seed”, “the start of creation” so I’ve switched from “Bigia” to “B-Ja”. Sounds like a rapper’s name?

10.) What are some of your future plans down the road ?
Finish my book and see it on the bookstore shelves, not only in Italy but around the world.
Open new opportunities outside Italy. Here things are going bad. Flat mind, flat wallets.
Continue creating and be immersed in love like now.

Well there you have it, from the man himself – Andrea “B-Ja” Bigiarini.  He illustrates perfectly that for those who wish to embrace this inevitability, it can work beautifully. We find it so poignant and magnificent and heartwarming that a man with the utmost of traditional design backgrounds has chosen to give these newfangled and much deliberated creative platforms a shot. Instead of lamenting their evilness, with an open mind and heart, he’s simply decided to jump in and give it a try. We’re very glad he did. And we’re hoping more talented people embrace his mindset.  The creative community wishes him all the best.
